The Peek Ahead — Lob City

Let’s spend a little time having a ‘peek ahead’ of what to look for in the coming day’s games. I will name one player from each position who is likely to exceed their usual production given their upcoming matchup, as well as guys available on the waiver-wire to help you in specific categories.

Disclaimer: With only two games left this season, it always pays to check back prior to tip-off as there will be innumerable players sitting due to rest or minor injuries, thus elevating their backups into key roles. In a tight fantasy matchup, grabbing the backup, may swing things your way.

Chris Paul, PG, Los Angeles Clippers vs Denver Nuggets

This is obviously a no-brainer as Paul is the best point guard in the NBA. With only two games on the schedule, Paul is the clear choice over Deron Williams, Raymond Felton and Aaron Brooks.

Joe Johnson, SG/SF, Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks

Johnson scores and doesn’t do much of anything else, although he has surprised me this season. In the last month, he is 50th ranked player in fantasy basketball, in large part due to his incredible shooting. The Knicks are done, so Johnson should be able to put up big numbers.

Matt Barnes, SF, Los Angeles Clippers vs Denver Nuggets

Barnes is going to be an elite daily fantasy option against the sieve-like Nuggets’ defense. He’s been great in the latter half of the season and should be able to give you two more big performances.

Blake Griffin, PF, Los Angeles Clippers vs Denver Nuggets

The best feature of Blake’s fantasy performance this season has been his improvement in free throws. He’s increased his shooting up from 66 percent to 71.3 percent this season and over the last month, it’s been even better. He’s hitting 79.6 percent in that time frame and seems to be a consensus number three in MVP voting.

DeAndre Jordan, C, Los Angeles Clippers vs Denver Nuggets

My pick for Most Improved Player, he has improved his fantasy rank from 181st, all the way up to 31st. He has improved every statistical category, including his free throws and now has the opportunity to finish off big against Denver.

This section highlights players who are available in more than 50% of ESPN leagues and are a decent option if you are looking for a guy to stream in for a day to give you the edge in your matchup.

If you need points: Timofey Mozgov, C, Denver Nuggets @ Los Angeles Clippers

Mozgov has really staked his claim to be the starting centre in Denver next season and coach Brian Shaw has said as much recently. He will be unchallenged for minutes up front and has averaged 16.5 points over the last two weeks.

If you need threes: Marcus Thornton, SG, Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks

Thornton has been up and down since arriving in Brooklyn, but has still averaged two triples over the past two weeks.

If you need rebounds: Timofey Mozgov, C, Denver Nuggets @ Los Angeles Clippers

Mozgov is a must add for points and boards and has now grabbed double digits rebounds in the last two games including that massive 29 rebound game last week.

If you need assists: Aaron Brooks, PG, Denver Nuggets @ Los Angeles Clippers

With no Ty Lawson, Brooks has the point guard spot to himself and has averaged 8.5 dimes in the four starts since Lawson went out.

If you need steals: Matt Barnes, SF, Los Angeles Clippers vs Denver Nuggets

Aside from his breakout offensive performances, Barnes is a defensive pest and should be in position to grab a couple of steals.

If you need blocks: Timofey Mozgov, C, Denver Nuggets @ Los Angeles Clippers

Have you grabbed Mozgov yet? If the answer is nyet, what are you waiting for?!
